How the abortion pill works
You may hear “the pill” as if it were one tablet. There are two medicines. You can know what they are before you swallow anything.
Two medicines, not one
The abortion pill is not one tablet. The first medicine is mifepristone. It blocks progesterone, the hormone a pregnancy needs to continue. The second is misoprostol. The label describes it as causing the pregnancy to be passed from the uterus.
Those are facts you can hold — not a set of steps to follow, and not a clinic recovery room. A mailed pack cannot tell you if the pregnancy is in the uterus, or how far along you are.
Talk with a nurse

Alabama law makes it unlawful to perform an abortion except when needed to prevent a serious health risk to the pregnant woman. Packs can still arrive in the mail. That is a fact — not a loophole — and a mailbox can’t confirm where the pregnancy is.
Why an ultrasound matters first
A home test can tell you a hormone is present. It cannot tell you where the pregnancy is. It cannot tell you dates. Those two facts change what any later decision even is. An ectopic pregnancy can still make a test turn positive. The approved pill regimen is not treatment for that.
A listed pregnancy center may offer a limited ultrasound at their location. Confirm with them before you go.
